: Music for your mouth
: Welcoming visitors, locals & celebrities for 17 years - "maturing like a fine wine" according to one customer. Many of our regulars have 'grown' with us, literally from babies to teenagers (and their parents are sometimes still allowed to come in with them...). All ages, couples, families, groups of friends, students, work colleagues and single diners sit side by side in a multi-cultural, harmonious atmosphere. A wonderful mix of customers. Warm music-lined walls are scattered with instruments, and old wooden mismatched tables & chairs create a comfortable and informal restaurant where you can enjoy anything from just a great coffee, or Café Concerto's famous Tomato soup, to a Club Ciabatta sandwich or a full three course meal. Background music is melodic jazz, swing and other classic music from the '50's. The style of the café is often likened to the 'brown' cafés of Amsterdam. Serving fresh home-made high-quality food, locally sourced where possible - milk and free-range eggs are from local farms & much of our quality meat is also farmed near York. A menu covering everything from comfort food to fabulous main dishes usually keeps everyone happy. We believe in high-quality, simple, fresh interesting food that often surprises customers whose expectations may be limited. Our wine (a range of house wines and blackboard specials) is marked up by a sensible margin - rather than multiplied in the traditional way to an extortionate level. At Café Concerto you will find professionalism without pomposity, friendly rather than formal. Our waiting team is a 'cut above average', speaking English perfectly and genuinely enjoying their job - looking after you. Most of our team of 20 plus have been working with us long-term, many for 4 or more years, several for a decade or more. They are the key to our ongoing success. Ian & Rozz Hancox, both graduates in Hospitality & Leisure, started their careers in the luxury market at companies such as The Box Tree in Ilkley, Searcy's Catering, & The Greenhouse Restaurant in Mayfair. Later they spent several years on the Management teams of The Canberra (P & O), Dorchester Hotel, Mossiman's Dining Club in Belgravia, & Champney's Health Club in Piccadilly, where they met in 1990. Our aim is to offer good, friendly service and great food to suit all occasions in a really welcoming atmosphere.
